Frequently asked questions
Which EDMs and total stations are supported?
The PolyField Apeks AM02i, plus EDMs from APEKS, Hi-Target, GeoMax, Mato and Leica, connected over USB. See the full hardware list.
Which tablet should I use?
Any Android tablet works. We recommend an 8-inch screen for the best experience for officials. We like the Oukitel RT3 Pro and Ulefone Armor Pad Pro rugged tablets (we're not affiliated with either). EDMs with PolyField built in, like the PolyField Apeks AM02i, have their own screen and need no tablet.
Do I need the server?
Not to get started. Stand-alone mode gives you the calibration wizard, a clear distance display, a local heat map and some statistics. Recording results per athlete and syncing with competition systems need PolyField Server.
Which competition management systems does PolyField work with?
Athletics App and OpenTrack are fully supported: start lists download and results upload in real time. With Roster Athletics you can download start lists, but uploading results isn't possible yet.
Do I need an internet connection?
PolyField runs the meet on a dedicated local network. PolyField Server needs internet to link with your competition management system: downloading start lists, and uploading results to OpenTrack or Athletics App. Without it, the meet runs locally but isn't linked to them. PolyField & Track Displays is local only and never needs internet.
What network do I need?
A dedicated network of its own, separate from any guest or public Wi-Fi at the stadium. Devices on it must be able to talk to each other directly, so the network can't isolate devices (often called client or AP isolation) or split them into separate segments. App devices connect to PolyField Server, and screens connect to PolyField & Track Displays or Server, over this local network.
Which photo finish systems does PolyField & Track Displays support?
FinishLynx and TimeTronics. See the Displays page and the Displays manual.
How much does PolyField cost?
The App is free. PolyField & Track Displays is pay-what-you-can for clubs and counties. Server starts at £50 a year for clubs and counties. See pricing.
How many tablets can connect to one server?
There's no limit on the number of apps connected to a PolyField Server.
How many licences do I need for a stadium?
One PolyField Server and one PolyField & Track Displays per stadium. Each licence covers the computer the software runs on. One Server handles every field event, and one Displays supports up to 100 connected screens. See pricing.
Can PolyField read results out loud?
Yes. The app has an optional voice read-out that speaks each result: bib, name, round and distance.
Where does athlete data go?
Competitions run on a dedicated local network, and the server syncs results with the competition platform the athlete data came from. We're also testing PolyField Results, where organisers can choose to publish heat maps: athlete pages are anonymised and deleted after 90 days, and athletes can request deletion sooner. Read our privacy policy.
